How can India win a permanent united nations security council seat

India just won a non-permanent seat on United Nations Security Council
I guess I will be happier when we get a permanent seat. However, I doubt it will happen till we are recognized as a global player economically and militarily.

While economical power is happening slowly, I sometimes think that India should playing a bigger role in military arena.

Here are some ideas (in the decreasing order of plausibility):

  • Attack Somalian pirates and set up a base there. That will win us some goodwill as well as create Indian presence in a place that close to strategic oil transport location as well a hopping point to future mineral reserves in Africa.
  • Set up Base in Fiji: Fiji has a majority Indian population but is ruled by a military government that is unsympathetic to Indians. Perfect reason to invade, set up base and even make a territory !! This will resist Chinese presence as well give a foothold in Pacific.
  • Attack Japanese Whale hunting ships: Japanese hunt intelligent and increasingly endangered whales in international water inspite of near-consensus on its harm to our environment. A few warning shots at these ships will give a big boast to India’s image as world’s policeman. (We can launch these attacks from our forthcoming military base in Fiji. See how it all fits together !! )

That will get us a seat faster than we can say “Commonwealth Games”

Happy Birthday to me

I am thirty-five today.

I thought I would share some of wishes that are going through my mind when I blow the candles tonight:

  • I wish I turn out to be a great father.
  • I wish me and my wife always live happily together and in comfort.
  • I wish India finds its rightful place on the world forum and grows to be country with no corruption or poverty.
  • I wish America continues to lead the world not just in economy and military but also in education, new research and fair treatment for all.
  • I wish IPO market bounces back and my last startup GlobalLogic goes public soon.

Now, while I am on the soapbox; Here is what I have learnt and I truly believe in:

  • This guy is right. Most of our life is just “luck”. We know much less than we think we do. We can predict even lesser. 95% of what happens to us is not related to our actions.
  • BUT that 5% is important. We can not control what happens to us. About the only choice we have is how we react. That reaction may not change anything outside; but in that choosing, is the only chance of our happiness.
  • That life is shorter than we think. The good or the bad will pass faster than we realize. So when in doubt – prioritize long-term over short-term.
  • And yes, nobody can beat the stock market consistently and with profit without inside information. Anybody who claims otherwise is lying.

Ayodhya verdict

I do not know if I  agree with (or even care about) Ayodhya verdict but one thing I am very thankful for: the govt and most major parties have accepted it with grace and there is no instigation of
violence by any side.

Perhaps, as a nation, we are finally growing out of our juvenile instincts. (one can hope)

Food Trucks in DC area

Washington Post does a review of food carts in DC area. I think DC is slowly becoming the casual food capital of the country.

After the local 5 guys were rated the best fast food burgers in the country, many other fast food chains in the DC area are catching up making DC the burger capital of the country and the Indian carts are getting there.

Also, the costumes add a nice touch:
